Free Holiday Coasters - Easy to Decorate!
Y’all already know how much I love the holidays! December is basically a month long themed party with the accessories being family, food, and sparkles. To that end, I made up this super easy garter-stitch based coaster pattern to use with your left over yarn from all those holiday projects - a nice stocking stuffer, and a great way to bring knits along to the party!
I originally made these up for my knitting club at work for our holiday party. Made a little assembly line in front of my tiny fake christmas tree and started churning them out (they really work up quick!)
I also brought along all the materials so that folks could make them themselves, but I wanted to have extra on hand in case people wanted to create a set!
So without further ado here is the Coaster pattern:
Materials: Worsted weight yarn (various colors), 6mm needles, scissors and a measuring tape
Pattern notations: co - cast on, st - stitch, k - knit, p - purl, sl1P - slip 1 stitch purl-wise
Finished measurement: 5in x 5in (with stretch can be 5.5in x 5.5in)
CO 20
Row 1-6: *Sl1P, k across* repeat ** 5 more times for a total of 6 rows
Row 7: Sl1P, k 3, p12, k4, turn
Row 8: Sl1P, k across, turn
Rows 9-22 (or until stockinette section measures 3”): repeat Rows 7+8
Rows 23-27: Repeat Row 1 5x (only 5 rows this time!)
Row 28: cast off
We had a few folks who are very new to knitting, so we wanted to be inclusive and provide a fun crafty opportunity for them as well - if you’re going to make up some of these coasters - why not share the fun with your family or friends?
And so we brought along a ton of tapestry needles so that folks could duplicate stitch their own designs on top! Drinks-themed, holiday themed, you name it! There are many easy duplicate stitch tutorials on YouTube, or even diagrams on Google images, so you don’t have to limit yourself.
The only thing to keep in mind is that these coasters are relatively small (only 5 in” by 5 in”) so the resolution on most designs will be low - best keep to simple ones!
Is there a better feeling than immediately using something you’ve made? I don’t think so! So obviously we brought some whiskey to try too! I hope you enjoy this pattern as much as I did and my club enjoyed decorating and drinking on them!
